Overview
An easy route covering the region east and north of Gent. Conveniently starting and ending at the Gent Dampoort train station. Not the most scenic or historical ride, but the breweries make it worthwhile, and it is always nice to see how the invisible border with the Netherlands instantly changes the architecture.

Would love to see more of these types of places around Belgium. A microbrewery with a taproom, terrace, a place for the kiddies to play, and along a bike route. This is how you do it. I have tried the pilsner, tripel, and quadrupel and all are delicious. The pilsner makes all the Belgian commercial brands like Jupiler, Maes, Cristal, and Primus look silly because, dare I say, it resembles the fresh, crisp style of the German pilsners. The quadrupel is >10% alcohol and is not so dissimilar to the Maredsous Tripel. I can’t overstate my enthusiasm over discovering this brewery and I wish them much success… and broader distribution. As of this post, you can only get the beer at the brewery. The icing on the cake is that the staff were friendly and energetic.

Brouwerij Van Steenberge
Cycling Highlight: 🍺 (Beer: 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺)

The rating as a cycling highlight is no disrespect to the brewery. This is a big commercial brewery, but doesn’t have a taproom or gift shop which is accessible outside of a group tour. But Van Steenberge makes some of the best Belgian beers out there. Augustijn, Piraat, Gulden Draak, and Bornem are the main brands. I went thru a Piraat phase recently. Love that beer. Always thought that Gulden Draak has the best name and design of any Belgian beer.

Huisbrouwerij Den Tseut

A cool microbrewery in the middle of tiny Oosteeklo. I have managed to visit this brewery twice and have always been warmly welcomed. Tasting is on the weekends. Check their website for the seasonal opening hours. I had a De Cister, a delectable unfiltered blond made from their own hops and later tried the Den Bi3r tripel. Not your typical tripel, the website describes it as a spiced beer, and I could definitely detect a touch of cinnamon.

Dok Brewing Company

A craft brewery with an expansive repertoire of their own creations and guest beers. Plenty of seating inside and out, located in the Dok Noord area of Gent. About a 20 minute walk from the historical center and perfect for swinging by on bike while exploring the canals.
